When I worked on the Akita Bond design, I wanted one quote that could carry the full weight of what this breed is. Not a slogan, not a decoration, something that, if you live with an Akita, you read and simply nod.

Every Akita is proof that legends are born not made.

Think about your Akita: you notice it right away. He fills the room with his presence, locks eyes with you like he knows everything. No fancy training or titles needed. He comes as a legend. You feel it in everyday moments: charging through a rainy walk without hesitation, or guarding you with a single glance.

People often talk about training a dog. With an Akita, that conversation is always more nuanced. Yes, they learn, but the core of who they are - the dignity, the loyalty, the absolute certainty of their own worth - that does not come from training. It was already there the day they arrived. You do not shape an Akita's character, like as you don’t become master of an Akita; if you deserve, you earn its respect.

That is the legend. Born, not made.

Akita Logic: Why Follow When You Can Lead?

There is something in that phrase that captures the breed's relationship with us more honestly than a thousand carefully chosen adjectives. The Akita does not follow out of habit, instinct, or the need for approval. -The following applies to dogs off-leash- When an Akita walks by your side, it is by choice. And when it leads you - which it often does depending on the surroundings - it is not a matter of dominance, but simply its nature expressing itself with pride. 

But it is only in nature that the true greatness of these dogs becomes apparent. When I take my Akitas into the mountains—or even just to the park, but with complete freedom—the dog’s true character comes to the fore. That is where you recognize their legendary qualities. The dynamics of the pack come to the fore; in our case, and in the case of an Akita living alone with a human companion—whether in a family or not—the dog assumes the role of leader. Again, this is not a matter of dominance, it's because the spirit that animates an Akita has such wisdom and experience - sometimes more than our own - that it leads the dog to assume such a role.

That's why Akitas does not need a master.

I chose Japanese intentionally. There is a precision in the language when it comes to concepts of spirit, loyalty, and inner depth that translates beautifully into the Akita's world.
